Planning Futures

Bahamasair Employees Provident Fund (the “Fund”) is a defined contribution plan established on October 1, 1977, and was formally constituted on August 20, 1985, by a Declaration of Trust executed between Bahamasair Holdings Limited (“Bahamasair”), the Airport Airline and Allied Workers Union (AAAWU), and The Bahamas Professional Pilots Union (BPPU) now referred to as Bahamas Airline Pilots Association (B-ALPA).

The Fund’s Board of Trustees is made up of Bahamasair employees appointed by Bahamasair, AAAWU, B-ALPA and The Public Managers Union (PMU) to administer the Fund. The Board consists of nine (9) individuals of whom three (3) shall be appointed by Bahamasair, three (3) by the AAAWU, two (2) by the B-ALPA and one (1) by the PMU.

Objective - The main objective of the Fund is to provide every member, upon the termination of his or her service with Bahamasair, with a sum of money, the amount of which is determined in accordance with the Trust Deed.

Membership

A Bahamasair employee is eligible for membership if the employee is:

1. a full-time staff member of Bahamasair; or

2. nominated by Bahamasair

Once an employee is eligible for membership in the Fund, membership is mandatory. Employees qualifying for membership are admitted to the Fund six (6) months from the date of joining Bahamasair and being confirmed permanent. Management has the option to be admitted immediately from the date of hire.

Funding

All members contribute at least 5% of their basic salary to the Fund each pay period. This amount is matched by Bahamasair. All members who have been employed by Bahamasair for seven (7) years or more can elect to contribute 6% of their basic salary, the amount of which is matched by Bahamasair. All staff are allowed to contribute up to a maximum of 20%. However, the maximum amount that Bahamasair matches is 5% or 6% of their basic salary, depending on the employee’s status as previously outlined.
